The Ultimate Pool Service Technician Tools List

A pool tech is a repair shop on wheels. The right truck stocks a tool kit that handles weekly route stops and one-call repairs without a second trip back to the shop. The wrong one sends a tech home for a $4 part on a $400 service ticket. Here is the kit we see on the trucks of the pool companies that run tight routes and rarely lose a callback.

Water Testing

Water testing is the job. Without accurate readings on chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid, every other thing on this list is downstream of a guess.

• Taylor K-2006. The FAS-DPD drop kit is the industry-standard reference test. Slow but accurate, especially on free chlorine above 10 ppm where most strips and photometers tap out. Every shop should have one in the truck for the calls that need a real number.
• LaMotte WaterLink Spin Touch. A digital photometer that reads a full panel in about 60 seconds from a sealed disposable disk. Pricey upfront, but on a dense weekly route it pays for itself in time saved and consistency between techs.
• Test strips. AquaChek 7-way or similar for the in-and-out checks where the customer just wants to know the chlorine is on. Always pair strips with a real test if you find anything off.
• Salt water tester. A digital salinity meter for any pool with a chlorine generator. Salt cells are sensitive to the wrong number on either side.

Cleaning Gear

The pole tools are the daily-route workhorses. Stock spares, because they take a beating.

• Telescoping pole. An 8-to-16-foot anodized aluminum pole. Skimlite and Pentair Aluf-Tek are the two pro picks.
• Brushes. Nylon for vinyl and fiberglass. Stainless or combination steel-nylon for plaster. Tile brush for the waterline.
• Skimmer net and leaf rake. A flat skim net for the waterline and a deep-bag leaf rake for floor pickup. Refuse to work without both.
• Vacuum head and hose. Weighted flex head for vinyl, brush head for plaster. A 30-to-50-foot vacuum hose paired to the customer's pump.
• Pumice stone or block. The cheapest tool that earns its keep, every visit. Knocks calcium and scale off tile faster than acid.

Robotic Pool Cleaners

For one-time vacuum jobs, post-storm cleanouts, and customer add-ons, a robotic cleaner pays for itself fast. Two picks cover most service work:

• Maytronics Dolphin. The Sigma and Premier are the residential workhorses. The commercial-grade triple-motor models handle the big inground jobs and chlorine-heavy hotel pools.
• Polaris EPIC 8520 or 9650iQ. Strong scrubbing, double-helix brush design, app control on the iQ. Solid all-around for residential.

Carry one or two on the truck for cleanouts and customer demos. Most shops also resell the cleaners they trust, which adds a margin line to the route.

Hand Tools

The boring half of the kit. Most callbacks are loose nuts and missing washers, not exotic equipment.

• Allen wrenches and hex keys, including a 1/8" for Sta-Rite motors and 1/16" for the thermostat knob on a Laars heater.
• Spanner wrench for pump strainer pots and filter lids.
• Channel-lock pliers, pipe wrench, needle-nose pliers, adjustable wrench.
• Screwdrivers (Phillips, flat, square), nut drivers, putty knife, rubber mallet.
• Multi-tool. Leatherman or similar.
• Magnetic retrieval pole. A telescoping pole with a neodymium tip pulls a dropped wrench out of an 8-foot pool faster than a tech can take their boots off.

Power Tools

• Cordless drill. A waterproof or fully sealed cordless drill is worth the upcharge if your route includes vinyl liners. Spinning screws and leaky flanges get fixed without draining.
• Cordless underwater grinder. Touches up imperfections on concrete pools and lifts surface stains without the safety hassle of acid.
• Battery pressure washer. Customer water pressure is unreliable. A battery washer at 600 to 1,000 PSI handles tile rinses and equipment-pad cleanouts without depending on a hose bib.

Pumps, Hoses, and Drains

• 4-inch trash pump. A 4" trash pump moves up to 450 gallons per minute, roughly three times the throughput of a 2" pump. The math becomes obvious the first time you drain a 30,000-gallon pool on a Saturday.
• Drain King. The bladder fitting for a garden hose that clears clogged skimmer and main drain lines without breaking a fitting.
• Hoses. Heavy-duty discharge hose to match the pump, plus 50 feet of garden hose because the customer's never reaches.

Sealants and Tape

• Pool putty (epoxy stick) for underwater patches.
• PVC primer and cement for plumbing repairs.
• Teflon tape for threaded fittings.
• Silicone lubricant for o-rings and gaskets.
• Pool plumbing sealant, sometimes sold as "blue goo," for the threaded fittings that won't seal with tape alone.
• Duct tape and electrical tape. Two rolls of each, stocked weekly.

Electrical Safety

Pool equipment is high-voltage equipment in a wet environment. The non-negotiable tools:

• Multimeter. Confirm power is off before opening a heater, motor, controller, or light. A $40 Klein meter beats a $4,000 emergency-room bill.
• Non-contact voltage tester. A pen-style tester for fast spot checks on outlet covers and junction boxes.
• GFCI outlet tester. Customer panels age out. A 30-second GFCI test catches the failures before a tech becomes the test.

Software belongs in the kit too. Routes, customer notes, water-test history, and invoicing run faster on a phone or tablet than on paper.
