Tablets are the field service workhorse today. They run dispatch software, capture customer signatures, photograph job-site issues, pull up parts catalogs, and let techs invoice from the truck. A laptop is too bulky for a crawl space and a phone screen is too small for paperwork. The right tablet sits in the middle and runs all day.
The catch: a $400 consumer tablet that lives in a sun-baked truck bed, rides through attics, and gets dropped on concrete is going to spend more time at the repair counter than on the job. Buying for field service means buying for the environment first, the spec sheet second. Here is what to look for, plus the tablets we see actually working in the field.
What to Look For
A handful of specs separate a tablet that survives a year on the truck from one that does not.
- IP rating. The two-digit code after IP tells you dust and water resistance. IP65 means dust-tight and water-jet resistant. IP67 adds short-term submersion to one meter, IP68 goes deeper. For most field service, IP65 or IP67 is the sweet spot.
- MIL-STD-810H. The U.S. military's environmental durability standard. Drop-tested, vibration-tested, temperature-tested. If the spec sheet does not mention it, the tablet was not built for the field.
- Screen brightness. A direct-sunlight-readable screen needs 800 to 1,000 nits. A standard consumer tablet at 500 nits is unreadable on a roof at noon.
- Glove touch. A capacitive screen tuned to register cold-weather and disposable gloves. Nice to have on residential work, must-have on commercial and outdoor jobs.
- Battery life. Twelve hours of real-world runtime is the bar. Hot-swappable batteries are the difference between finishing the route and missing the last call.
- Cellular option. Built-in LTE or 5G with its own SIM saves you from depending on a customer's Wi-Fi or a tech's phone hotspot.
Top Field Service Tablets
iPad Air (M4)
Released March 2026, 11" or 13" screen, M4 chip, $599 / $799. Most field service teams already run iPad. Staff knows iOS, the App Store has every major dispatch and invoicing app, and the Air is fast enough for everything short of heavy CAD.
The iPad is not rugged on its own. It needs a case. Pair an iPad Air with a tradesman-grade case from OtterBox, Catalyst, or UAG and a glass screen protector and you have a setup that survives ladders, attics, and the occasional drop. Add an Apple Pencil for signatures and field sketches.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 5
Purpose-built rugged Android tablet. 8" 600-nit display with 120Hz refresh, IP68, MIL-STD-810H, removable battery, glove touch out of the box, S Pen included. The Galaxy Tab Active 5 runs about $650 unlocked, with optional 5G. The removable battery is the killer feature: a backup pack costs around $50 and turns a long shift into a no-brainer.
Best fit: Android shops that want a no-case rugged form factor and the option to swap batteries on the truck.
Panasonic Toughbook G2
The gold standard fully rugged Windows tablet. 10.1" 1,000-nit glove-touch display, MIL-STD-810H, IP66, dual hot-swappable batteries, configurable barcode scanner, and a working temperature range from -20°F to 145°F. The Toughbook G2 starts around $3,000 and goes up fast with options.
This is what utility crews, public safety, oil and gas, and other industries that genuinely cannot afford a hardware failure carry. Overkill for residential HVAC or lawn care, correct for a 16-hour storm-response shift.
Dell Latitude 7230 Rugged Extreme
Dell's 12" Windows rugged. 1,200-nit glove-touch display, IP-65, drop-tested from 4 feet, hot-swappable dual batteries, and 12th-gen Intel Core inside. The Latitude 7230 runs about $2,500 to $3,500 depending on configuration. The smaller sibling, the Latitude 7030, is a 10.1" version that comes in lighter and cheaper.
Strong middle-ground pick for techs who want rugged Windows without going full Toughbook.
Microsoft Surface Pro 11
Not rugged, but the strongest non-rugged Windows option. 13" OLED display, Snapdragon X or Intel Core Ultra, full Windows 11. Pair the Surface Pro 11 with a UAG Plasma or Spigen Tough Armor case and a screen protector for a serviceable field setup.
Best fit: Windows-first shops where a tech spends most of the day at desks or in the truck cab and wants laptop power in tablet form.
Amazon Fire HD 10
Budget option at about $150. Limited to Amazon's app store unless you sideload Google Play, slow processor, no rugged certifications. The honest case for a Fire HD 10 is "we hand these to ten apprentices for take-photos-and-fill-forms duty and treat them as disposable." That can pencil out, especially across a fleet.
Cellular vs Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi-only tablets are cheaper. Cellular tablets are more reliable. The split is not subtle.
If your crew works in homes and offices, a Wi-Fi tablet plus a hotspot on the tech's phone usually works. If your crew works in attics, basements, mechanical rooms, parking garages, or rural areas where customer Wi-Fi is spotty and cell signal is weaker than open street level, the built-in cellular radio earns its keep. Most Android and iPad lines offer cellular variants for an extra $150 to $200, plus a data plan.
For larger fleets, a single shared data plan across all tablets through a business carrier like Verizon Business, AT&T Business, or T-Mobile for Business is often cheaper than reimbursing tech phone hotspots.
How to Pick
Walk through three questions in order:
- Is the device exposed to the environment? Roofs, crawl spaces, oil and gas, utilities, and public safety: pick a Toughbook G2, Latitude 7230, or Galaxy Tab Active 5. In and out of vehicles, residential homes, and offices: an iPad in a rugged case is fine. A solid phone case for the field matters too if your crew also relies on phones.
- Windows, iOS, or Android? Pick the one your dispatch software runs best on. Most modern field service platforms support all three, but some still favor one.
- What is your replacement budget? A $150 Fire that gets replaced every 18 months pencils out the same as a $1,200 iPad in a $100 case that lasts four years. A $3,000 Toughbook only pencils out if you actually need its uptime.
